WEEK FOUR
The Lake and Land Studio architectural team is comprised of four designers, one lead designer, and two principal designers. Along with the architectural design team there is an administrative coordinator and accountant. As the Interior Designer at Lake and Land, I work with the architectural designers on a daily basis to facilitate the interior design of clients homes.
The architectural team will begin the process of designing the client’s home with meetings to discuss wants and expectations regarding their designs. As the interior designer I will be present for these first initial meetings to meet the clients and get a sense for their overall design style. After the initial meetings the architectural team takes over to continue meeting and developing the structure of the home. Once the design is about 85% completed I will join back in working with the clients to begin designing the interiors. During this stage of the design process my main objective is to help the clients get a better understanding of what the home will feel like through the use of digital renderings. The meetings during this stage are typically led by me in order to fine tune the design of the interiors. The architect working on the project is also present in these meeting in order to finalize the homes architecture.
Once the architectural portion of the home is done a light CD set will be created by the architectural team so that the clients can get a more accurate bid from their contractor. Getting this more accurate bid is very important so that I can then be given a set budget for the interiors. I then begin to meet with clients one on one to finalize the elements of the design that will be build within the home such as cabinet layouts and electrical selections as these will need to be notated on the final CD set. Once these decision are finalized the architectural team will begin completing the final CD set, and I will be completing the interior CD set.
As the final CD’s are being created I will continue meeting with the clients to get approval on specifications and materials. The CD’s are then sent to the client and the contractor will begin the building process. Depending on the level of complexity within the architecture and interior design I will have varying levels of contact with the contractor. As the building process is begins I will place orders for the materials and furnishings that have been approved by the client. As the home nears completion I will begin making trips to monitor the progress and make sure that materials are being installed as specified.
